I just returned from the week long International Woodcarvers Congress event, held in Maquoketa, Iowa. I taught a 2-day class in carving unusual/found wood, on Monday/Tuesday. Had a full class of fun and enjoyable students, who worked hard to produce some very nice carvings. Time was too short to complete most of them. Even so, the students were very complimentary of the teaching.
In the competition area, the 3 judges were able to complete their assignment within the 2-day judging period, and the show opened on Thursday. I was shocked, amazed, humbled, shocked, and amazed, when I learned that my ‘White Buffalo’ had been awarded 3rd Best Of Show (termed 2nd Runner Up BOS at this competition), and ‘Moon Shadow’ won 1st in Class in the Unusual Wood- Human Root division, and was chosen for the Flexcut Creativity Award.
On top of the joy of the awards, several people added my carvings to their collections. Every way I look at it, the trip was a huge success. Thanks to all the hard workers that made it all happen.
